Toi & Moi
The Toi et Moi ring is one of the most romantic jewellery designs in history. The name comes from French and means “You and Me.” Traditionally, the ring features two gemstones set side by side, symbolizing two individuals joined together while still retaining their own identities.
The style is most famously associated with Napoleon Bonaparte and Joséphine de Beauharnais. In 1796, Napoleon proposed to Joséphine with a ring featuring two pear-shaped stones placed together (a diamond and a sapphire). That engagement ring became one of the earliest and most famous examples of the Toi et Moi style.
Because the two stones are often different, the ring can also symbolize:
- Opposites attracting
- Complementary personalities
- Different backgrounds coming together
Unlike a solitaire ring, which focuses attention on a single stone, a Toi et Moi ring naturally tells a story. People often choose different stone shapes, colors, or sizes to reflect the personalities of the two people involved.
